The Science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, develop critical thinking, and equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand the world around them. Through the study of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, students build secure scientific knowledge, develop practical and investigative skills, and learn to analyse evidence, solve problems, and communicate scientific ideas confidently. Our carefully sequenced curriculum revisits key concepts to deepen understanding and support long-term retention, while fostering resilience, independence, and a lifelong appreciation of science. We aim to prepare all students for success at GCSE and beyond, enabling them to make informed decisions, pursue further study or careers in STEM, and recognise the vital role science plays in society and the wider world.
At Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy, Science is important because:
- Understanding the World – Science helps us explain how the natural world works, from the smallest cells to the vastness of space, enabling us to make sense of the world around us.
- Improving Lives – Scientific discoveries drive advances in medicine, technology, engineering, and environmental sustainability, improving health, quality of life, and tackling global challenges such as climate change and disease.
- Developing Essential Skills – Studying science builds critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical, and practical skills, preparing students for further education, a wide range of careers, and informed decision-making in everyday life.
Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to:
- Build secure scientific knowledge by developing a strong understanding of key concepts in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics through a carefully sequenced curriculum.
- Develop scientific enquiry and practical skills by encouraging students to investigate, analyse evidence, solve problems, and think critically like scientists.
- Prepare students for future success by fostering curiosity, resilience, and confidence, equipping them with the knowledge and transferable skills needed for further study, STEM careers, and informed participation in an increasingly scientific world.
In Science, we deliver the curriculum through:
- Learning through practical investigation – Students develop their understanding by planning and carrying out experiments, making observations, collecting data, and evaluating evidence to test scientific ideas.
- Applying knowledge to real-world contexts – Science connects classroom learning to everyday life and global challenges, helping students understand issues such as health, climate change, energy, and technological innovation.
- Developing evidence-based thinking – Students learn to question, analyse, and evaluate evidence, using logical reasoning to draw conclusions and communicate scientific explanations with accuracy and confidence.
GCSE Assessment
Students complete two examination papers in each of the three science disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Each paper is 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) in duration, with all papers contributing equally to the final GCSE grade.
We know our curriculum is successful when students can:
- Students demonstrate secure scientific knowledge and can confidently apply their understanding to unfamiliar contexts, practical investigations, and examination questions.
- Students make strong progress over time, achieve positive GCSE outcomes, and are well prepared for further study, apprenticeships, or careers in STEM and related fields.
- Students develop curiosity, resilience, and confidence as scientists, showing enthusiasm for scientific enquiry and recognising the relevance of science in everyday life and the wider world.
