At Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy, History is important because:

• It helps students understand the present.

 History explains how past events have shaped the world we live in today. By studying topics such as wars, democracy, migration, civil rights, and technological change, students can better understand current events, cultures, and political systems.

• It develops critical thinking and analytical skills.

 History teaches students to evaluate evidence, compare different interpretations, identify bias, and construct well-supported arguments. These skills are valuable across all subjects and are essential for making informed decisions in everyday life.

• It promotes empathy and responsible citizenship.

 Learning about the experiences of people from different times, cultures, and backgrounds helps students develop empathy and appreciate diversity. It also encourages them to reflect on issues such as justice, equality, and human rights, preparing them to become active and responsible members of society.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to:

History at LHEA

History is taught through enquiry-based learning. Each unit is centred around a key historical question that encourages students to investigate, discuss and reach evidence-based conclusions. Students regularly analyse a range of historical sources, compare different interpretations and build arguments using historical evidence. This develops both their historical knowledge and the critical thinking skills that are essential for success across the curriculum and beyond school.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that students build a secure understanding of chronology and make meaningful connections between different periods of history. Core concepts such as cause and consequence, change and continuity, significance, interpretation and evidence are revisited throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, allowing students to deepen their understanding over time.

History differs from many other subjects because there is rarely a single correct answer. Instead, students are encouraged to debate, challenge ideas and justify their opinions using evidence. They learn that historians can interpret the same event differently and that conclusions must always be supported by reliable evidence rather than opinion.
