KS4 Exam Board: Edexcel Pearson BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology

At Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy, Digital Information Technology is important because:

• It equips students with the practical digital skills needed to thrive in education, employment and the modern workplace.

• It develops students' understanding of how organisations use digital technologies to solve problems, communicate effectively and make informed decisions using data.

• It prepares students for further study and careers by developing creativity, collaboration, project management and independent learning through realistic business scenarios.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to:

• Develop students' confidence in using industry-standard digital tools to design, create, test and evaluate digital products.

• Build knowledge progressively through cyber safety, digital communication, branding, spreadsheets and human-computer interface (HCI) design before completing externally assessed and internally assessed units.

• Prepare students for success in the Pearson BTEC Tech Award by developing both technical knowledge and the employability skills expected in modern workplaces.

In Digital Information Technology, we deliver the curriculum through:

• A carefully sequenced curriculum that develops practical digital skills through realistic business scenarios, allowing students to apply their learning to authentic workplace contexts.

• Regular Checking for Understanding (CFU) through retrieval practice, questioning, teacher modelling, live demonstrations, mini-whiteboards, low-stakes quizzes, peer assessment and immediate feedback to address misconceptions and support progress.

• Practical, assignment-based learning that mirrors vocational practice:

Students develop digital communication and graphic design skills before progressing to spreadsheet modelling and Human-Computer Interface (HCI) design.

Spreadsheet lessons are structured around business scenarios where students plan, create, test and evaluate solutions using industry-standard spreadsheet techniques.

Students regularly complete coursework-style tasks that reflect Pearson assessment requirements while developing independence, organisation and problem-solving skills.

Curriculum Overview

Assessment

• Regular formative assessment through retrieval activities, questioning, live feedback, teacher observation and Checking for Understanding during every lesson.

• Practical assessment through coursework-style projects, spreadsheet modelling tasks, HCI design activities and digital product creation based on realistic business scenarios.

• Internal assessments, Pearson-style assignment briefs, mock assessments and the externally assessed examination are used to monitor progress and prepare students for certification.

BTEC Qualification Assessment

Combination of internally assessed coursework and one externally assessed examination.

Component 1: Exploring User Interface Design Principles and Project Planning Techniques – 30% (Internal Assessment)

Component 2: Collecting, Presenting and Interpreting Data – 30% (Internal Assessment)

Component 3: Effective Digital Working Practices – 40% (External Examination)

• Students produce high-quality vocational coursework that demonstrates technical accuracy, creativity and effective problem-solving using industry-standard digital tools.

• Students achieve successful outcomes in the Pearson BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology and progress confidently to Level 3 qualifications, apprenticeships and careers within the digital and technology sectors.
